Dear colleagues,
Antibiotic resistance is a major global public health problem. Of particular concern are bacteria that are capable of avoiding the action of antibiotics due to the formation of biofilms or the transition to a special state of persistence. An increased frequency of persister formation has been observed in biofilms due to limited access to nutrients and oxygen. This leads to the fact that the stationary phase occurs faster and the proportion of persisters in the population increases. Bacteriostatic substances cannot solve such a problem and the use of bactericidal preparations is required, which can have a more serious effect on bacteria and also on their environment. Populations of bacteria will respond to such exposure and it will depend on the composition of the microbiome. Therefore, the main subject of this Special Issue includes any combination of bactericidal drugs on the bacterial population both at the individual level (planktonic forms and persisters) and at the group level (biofilms, microbiome), as well as the responses of bacteria population to bactericidal antibiotics.
