В.П. Скулачев возглавляет Институт Физико-химической биологии (доверенность ректора) а также организованный им в 2002-м году факультет биоинженерии и биоинформатики МГУ.

В.П. Скулачев — ведущий ученый в области биохимии и биоэнергетики клетки, автор более 450 научных работ. Им описано явление межмембранного переноса электронов, обнаружен эффект терморегуляторного разобщения окисления и фосфорилирования, доказано превращение химической и световой энергии в электрическую форму посредством белков внутриклеточных мембран, выяснено биологическое значение неравновесного распределения ионов Na и К между клеткой и средой, открыт новый тип энергетики живых организмов - «натриевый цикл». В последние годы научная деятельность В.П. Скулачева связана с изучением молекулярных механизмов процессов старения.

С 2003 года В.П. Скулачев — организатор и руководитель междисциплинарного биомедицинского проекта «Ионы Скулачева», объединяющего около 300 отечественных и зарубежных ученых из десятков научно-исследовательских лабораторий и университетов. Цель данного проекта — разработка инновационных лекарственных препаратов, направленных на борьбу с различными возрастными патологиями организма и замедление процесса старения. В основу проекта положены идеи, выдвинутые В.П. Скулачевым еще в 1969 году.

Более 20 лет В.П. Скулачев является главным редактором журнала «Биохимия”, в последние годы ставшего самым цитируемым российским биологическим журналом. Он является членом редакционных коллегий журналов «FEBS Letters», «IUBMB-Life», «Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes», «Biophysics Reviews and Letters», «Cell Cycle», «The Open Aging Journal». В.П. Скулачев — почетный президент Всероссийского общества биохимиков и молекулярных биологов, член Европейской академии и президент Клуба российских членов Европейской Академии. В.П. Скулачев — лауреат премии Ленинского Комсомола (1967 г.), Государственной премии СССР (1975 г.), заслуженный профессор Московского государственного университета им. М.В. Ломоносова (1997 г.).
